City Council Member Dr. Harolyn Michielle Benson-Givens

Michielle BensonDr. Harolyn Michielle Benson-Givens was elected to City Council Place 3 in May of 2016. She is serving her first term in office.

Born in Tokyo Japan she spent the majority of her life traveling all around the world. This gives her a unique perspective on most all issues especially those involving culture and enrichment. She is the founder and executive director of The Arts for Minority Youth” and of Connor Resource Associates. She retired after 27 years in education, and garners numerous honors and awards including the prestigious Bayard H. Freidman Chair for Teaching Excellence in the Performing Arts, Outstanding Texan by the Texas State Legislature, and Extraordinary Women by the Minority Leaders & Citizens Council. Dr. Benson-Givens has lived in Forest Hill since 1979 where she is married to the love of her life Darryl L. Muhammad and is active in Vessels of Praise church where she serves on the Praise Team. In the community she is a member of the Forest Hill Lions Club, the Harlean Beal Site-based Management Team, The Girls Service League, Phi Delta Kappan, Mu Phi Epsilon Music Honorary, Texas Music Educators Association, National Music Educators Conference, Forest Hill Public Library Board of Trustee’s and as a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

Dr. Benson-Givens believes that “The City of Forest Hill belongs to the Citizens of Forest Hill. We are the selected and elected representatives of the citizens and we have a responsibility to see to the needs, wants and desires of our citizens.” Dr. Benson-Givens is honored and humbled that the people of Forest Hill have placed their confidence in her as a City Councilwoman. She is excited by the opportunity to assure that Forest Hill remains the best place to live, work and raise a family in the nation. Dr. Benson-Givens says “As Forest Hill continues to grow and attract new jobs, our city must balance ALL of the elements that make us great and work on things to make us even better.”
